Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device – there is no server that could see it. Once the page has loaded, the tool even works offline.
Why choose SVG for a placeholder?
It stays sharp at any size and weighs a couple of kilobytes, so one file serves a thumbnail and a full-width banner. It also opens as text: the colours and the label can be edited later in any editor, without regenerating anything.
Is the label real text I can select?
No, and deliberately so. The letters are drawn as outlines, which means the file needs no font installed on the viewer's machine and looks identical everywhere — including when it is rasterised into the PNG version. Selectable text would render as blank boxes wherever the font is missing.
What is a placeholder image for?
Holding the space an image will occupy before you have the real one. A layout built without them collapses the moment pictures arrive at a different size, so designers and developers block out the exact dimensions first and swap in the photographs later.
Why does the label show the dimensions?
Because that is the one thing you need to read off a mockup: which slot is 1200 × 630 and which is a 400 × 400 thumbnail. Type your own text if you would rather label the purpose — “hero”, “avatar” — and the size stays in the file name either way.
Can I use these images in a commercial project?
Yes. The image is generated from your own settings, and the label is drawn with Liberation Sans, which is licensed under the SIL Open Font License. There is nothing to attribute and no usage limit.
Does anything get uploaded, and is there a rate limit?
No to both. The image is drawn in your browser, so nothing leaves your device and nothing counts against a quota. Placeholder services that answer over the network — the well-known ones — see every request your page makes, and stop working the day they shut down.
