Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device – there is no server that could see it. Once the page has loaded, the tool even works offline.

What is in the package?

favicon.ico (16, 32 and 48 px), favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 px), icon-192.png and icon-512.png for Android and installable web apps, site.webmanifest with the app name and colours, snippet.html with the <link> and <meta> tags – and, if you started from an SVG, favicon.svg for browsers that prefer vectors.

How do I install it?

Unzip everything into the root folder of your website, so that /favicon.ico is reachable, and paste the contents of snippet.html into the <head> of your pages. If the files live in a subfolder, adjust the paths in the snippet and in site.webmanifest.

SVG or PNG – which source is better?

SVG, whenever you have one: every size is rendered from the vector and stays crisp, and the package includes the SVG favicon. A PNG works too but should be at least 512 × 512 px – smaller images are enlarged and look soft at the big sizes. Non-square images are centred in a square with transparent padding.

Why is the Apple icon not transparent?

iOS shows black behind transparent areas of the home-screen icon, so apple-touch-icon.png is flattened onto the background colour you choose. All other files keep their transparency.

Why is my file refused because of text?

The renderer runs in your browser without any fonts, so it cannot draw text. Rather than producing an image with the text silently missing, files containing <text> are refused. Convert text to paths in your editor first (Inkscape: Path → Object to Path; Illustrator: Type → Create Outlines) and try again.
