Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device – there is no server that could see it. Once the page has loaded, the tool even works offline.

Which sizes should I choose?

For a website favicon, 16/32/48 px is all browsers use. For a Windows application or shortcut icon take the Windows set, which adds 24 and 256 px – Explorer picks the best match for every view. “All seven” covers both and is the safest choice if you are unsure; the file grows accordingly.

Is this a real ICO file?

Yes. The file has the ICO directory with one entry per size. Each entry is stored as PNG, which the ICO format allows and which Windows (since Vista), macOS and every browser read – older tools that only know uncompressed BMP entries, such as Windows XP, show them as broken. Non-square drawings are fitted into the square and centred with transparent padding, or with the chosen background colour.

Why is my file refused because of text?

The renderer runs in your browser without any fonts, so it cannot draw text. Rather than producing an image with the text silently missing, files containing <text> are refused. Convert text to paths in your editor first (Inkscape: Path → Object to Path; Illustrator: Type → Create Outlines) and try again.

Do I need the other favicon sizes too?

Modern browsers also accept an SVG favicon and Apple devices want a 180 px PNG. The favicon package tool creates the full set including this ICO, a web manifest and the HTML snippet.
