File hash (SHA-256)
Calculates the SHA-256, SHA-1, SHA-384 or SHA-512 checksum of any file.
Runs in your browser – your file is never uploaded
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device – there is no server that could see it. Once the page has loaded, the tool even works offline.
Which algorithms are available – and why no MD5?
SHA-256 (default), SHA-1, SHA-384 and SHA-512, computed by your browser's built-in WebCrypto. MD5 is not offered: WebCrypto does not implement it, and it has been broken for integrity checks for years. If a website still lists an MD5 sum, ask them for SHA-256.
How do I verify a download with it?
Pick the same algorithm the download page lists, drop the downloaded file here and compare the hex string with the published one – every character must match. The output uses the same “<hash> <filename>” line as sha256sum, so you can also save it and run “sha256sum -c” on Linux or macOS.
Is a hash the same as encryption?
No. A hash is a one-way fingerprint: the same file always gives the same hash, but nobody can reconstruct the file from it. It proves that a file is unchanged; it does not hide its contents.
